Odd
I promise you, this is the second time I've had this convo.  The first was much longer, though, as the person on the other end decided the best idea was to flip out and refuse to believe that it was actually happening.

OrbitingTrout (3:41:40 AM): Hi.
d1rewlf (3:46:05 AM): mornin
d1rewlf (3:46:34 AM): how goes it?
OrbitingTrout (3:48:00 AM): hello
OrbitingTrout (3:48:03 AM): who is this?
d1rewlf (3:48:10 AM): Tim.  Who is this?
OrbitingTrout (3:48:24 AM): Michael
d1rewlf (3:49:16 AM): nice to meet you
OrbitingTrout (3:49:29 AM): What is your last name?
d1rewlf (3:50:18 AM): I'm sorry, why did you message me?  I only know like two Mikes.
OrbitingTrout (3:50:27 AM): I didn't message you
d1rewlf (3:50:37 AM): OrbitingTrout (3:41:40 AM): Hi.
d1rewlf (3:46:05 AM): mornin
d1rewlf (3:46:34 AM): how goes it?
OrbitingTrout (3:48:00 AM): hello
OrbitingTrout (3:50:55 AM): Um
OrbitingTrout (3:51:01 AM): My screen name is M*********c (name edited out so I ain't being rude. -T)
OrbitingTrout (3:51:05 AM): That is not my SN
d1rewlf (3:51:36 AM): that's weird, cause thta's what it's coming up as
d1rewlf (3:52:49 AM): might be a virus or something.  That happens every now and then.  Later.
OrbitingTrout (3:53:08 AM): Does it ever come from this screen name?
OrbitingTrout (3:53:17 AM): So you're saying when you respond, it comes to me?
OrbitingTrout (3:53:25 AM): even though it comes as a different SN?
OrbitingTrout (3:53:28 AM): That is odd.
OrbitingTrout (3:53:37 AM): Are you saying it's a virus on my end or your end?
d1rewlf (3:53:39 AM): I dunno, it's only ever happened to me once, and it was like three years ago, so I don't remember what the screenname was that time
OrbitingTrout (3:53:58 AM): Anyway, I would not recommend opening attachments
d1rewlf (3:53:58 AM): *shrugs* the last person I had this convo with, neither of us ever figured out who's comp it was
OrbitingTrout (3:54:03 AM): I have a rule that I don't open them--ever.
d1rewlf (3:54:12 AM): a fair rule
OrbitingTrout (3:54:14 AM): So if you ever opened them, more likely than not
OrbitingTrout (3:54:19 AM): you probably have the virus
OrbitingTrout (3:54:27 AM): I'm really careful with email
d1rewlf (3:54:43 AM): alright, well, either way, I'm just gonna go back to what I was doing now
d1rewlf (3:54:50 AM): have a good night
OrbitingTrout (3:56:03 AM): OK
OrbitingTrout (3:56:07 AM): Have a wonderful week

Very odd. I don't know what purpose this could serve as a virus, if it is one. Maybe it's just some weird guy looking to mess with people.

i found out something about it.
I guess theyre called "Troutbots"
and they link two people together, like it scrambles up responses and sends it to a person.

like say troutbot IMed you, you said something in response to hello like "hi?" the troutbot IMs another person, say me for example, and then it links the two people like that.

its very bizarre.
ive gotten at least a half a dozen IMs from various trout screen names.

THIS HAPPENED TO ME TOO! A couple of times. But the screenname was something about salmon.

Odd.

I think I might have an answer for ya
I know I'm late to the party here, as I had to google OrbitingTrout when it happened to me today... aaand your LJ came up as the first link on the list. :)

It seems to remind me of a program that ran for a while that would link two random AIM users and mask it so that both asked the same question about a hat.

It typically pops up around the time you make new LJ posts, or so this one did. It seems the Orbiting Trout one is of the same nature as I had just made a new one and it popped up on my AIM minutes later. In no way is it a virus. Just an annoyance perpetrated by the internets.

Re: I think I might have an answer for ya
...the sheer uselessness of such a program is, I suspect, what makes your explanation seem the most plausible.

Bravo.

Turns out, your information is rather accurate.
